So with this recipe, I chose to do this one because of its monstrous origins. Cthulhu, of course, is a Great Old One described by Lovecraft as “A monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind.”
Speaking of which, I think that, visually, this recipe really looks like cthulhu. I think that the bean sprouts are great at capturing the feelers on cthulhu’s face. So that’s why I thought it was important to get fresh bean sprouts. Also, they taste better. I guess if you’re not able to find any bean sprouts, spaghetti might be a good alternative, but if you can, try to find fresh bean sprouts if you make this recipe yourself.
Ingredients:
- 2 slices of Pumpernickel Bread
- Some butter
- Vegemite, marmite, or spicy plum sauce
- Some Bean Sprouts
- 2 eggs
Step 1: Cut Hole in Bread & Spread Butter & Marmite On
In terms of prep, first make a hole in the center of each piece of bread. Then, brush a bit of butter on each piece. I probably should’ve let the butter soften a little, but it’ll melt in the pan, so don’t worry about getting all of it covered.
Then, spread some marmite, or whatever you’re using, on the bread as well. The trick with marmite or vegemite is that you want to spread a really thin layer of it. They have a very intense flavor so less is more when it comes to these spreads.
You of course don’t need to include this if you don’t want to, but if you’ve never tried it, I think you should give it a chance.
Step 2: Toast Bread & Bean Sprouts
Next, in a large pan, melt some butter over medium heat and place the bread in the pan once the butter’s completely melted.
Then, scatter some of the bean sprouts around the bread, stirring and turning them occasionally and remove them when they start to brown.
Step 3: Add Yolk to Bread Hole & Cook Them Sunny Side Up
When you’re ready, carefully break and pour an egg into each hole in the bread, trying to keep the yolk intact. No worries if you break the yolk, it’ll still taste the same.
Let it cook for a couple of minutes and then cover the pan for a few minutes to cook the top of the eggs as well. The recipe book says to flip the bread to cook the top, but… yeah, it kinda ruins the yolky eyes. So, just cook your eggs sunny side up, and they should be good to go.
Step 4: Garnish w/ Bean Sprouts & Enjoy
Once the eyes are fully cooked to your liking, place them on a plate with the cooked bean sprouts and garnish with some uncooked bean sprouts to act as Cthulhu’s tendrils and your Vegemitey Cthulhu is ready to take over the world.
