So I was at a bookstore a couple of weeks ago, and found this really cool cookbook called the Necronomnomnom. It has a bunch of cool looking recipes inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft and I thought that it would be fun to do some of the recipes for the month of October.
This recipe in particular caught my interest because it was pretty simple to do and required so few ingredients. And despite its simplicity, it was still a very good spooky twist on pigs in a blanket. So look forward to some more terrifying recipes like this one coming this month of Spook-tober.
Ingredients:
- 12 Breakfast Sausages
- 1 tube of Croissant/Biscuit dough (Or make your own)
- Dipping Sauce (Ketchup, Mustard, Barbecue Sauce, etc.) (optional)
Special Equipment:
- Some toothpicks
- A cupcake pan
Step 1: Preheat Oven to 375°F
First, preheat the oven to 375°F. Then, while we wait, we’ll prepare the cultists.
Step 2: Cut “Legs” into Breakfast Sausages
To cut the legs of the cultists, grab your breakfast sausage and with a sharp, pointed knife, cut from the middle of each sausage vertically through the end. Rotate the sausage and cut again, making four legs.
You can cut the resulting four sections in half again to make 8 legs, but I was having trouble even cutting two.
One trick that I came up with was to give the sausages a nice sear to firm them up a bit. I just cooked it a bit on the stove just enough to make the sides brown, but not enough to completely cook it, since they’ll cook in the oven.
This allowed the legs to remain firm and kept them from falling apart, though I still wasn’t able to make 8 legs so I recommend just doing four since the legs will be too thin otherwise.
The recipe didn’t specify, but precooked sausages would probably work as well, allowing the legs to be easier to cut.
Step 3: Robe Your Cultists in Dough Robes
Once your cultists are ready, it’s time to wrap them in their robes. Grab your dough and cut it into 12 thin strips.
I originally was going to use a full triangle for each robe, but that seemed like too much dough, so instead I just cut the robes without following the guide and just divided the sheet into 12 rectangular pieces.
Even then, it was probably a bit too much dough, but make it however you see fit.
Step 4: Add Toothpicks & Place Cultists into Muffin Tin
Once your cultists are all robed. It’s time to place them in the sunken altars.
But before that, you want to secure your cultists from running away at the last minute by inserting two toothpicks into each sausage, forming an X in the middle.
Then place each of them upright in the muffin well. If you need to, you can use the knife or a toothpick to adjust the legs of the cultists trying to resist the ritual.
Step 5: Bake Cultists for 13 Minutes, or Until Golden Brown
Then, once the oven is done preheating and your cultists are prepped. Bake them in the oven for about 13 minutes, or until their robes turn golden brown.
Step 6: Remove from Oven & Serve w/ Condiment of Choice
Once the cooking ritual is complete, it’s time to prep these Cultists in Robes for the Ceremony of Devouring.
